에너벨 리

 

19세기 미국이 낳은 최고의 소설가 에드거 앨런 포는 시인, 소설가, 비평가로 그의 짧은 인생은 파란 많은 삶이 였다. 詩로서 유명한 [ 에너벨 리 ]와 [ 갈 가마귀 ]가 있고, 단편인 검은 고양이가 널리 잘 알려져 있다. 추리 소설로 유명한 검은 고양이는 인간 심리의 흉악함과 이상 심리 상태를 잘 표출한 글이다. 그 단편을 읽후에 지하실을 내려 갈때면 마음이 두근거리고 매우 불안한 느낌을 감출수 없었으며 검정색의 고양이만 보아도 깜짝깜짝 놀라는 버릇이 생겨서 지금도 고양이만 보면 무서워 진다. 그러나 에드거 앨런 포의 아름다운 詩 에너벨 리는 매우 좋아 했다. 에너벨 리 - 에드거 알렌 포우 - 오랜 오랜 옛날이었다. 바닷가 왕국에 에너벨 리라 불리는 혹시 여러분도 아실지 모르는 한 처녀가 살고 있었다. 헌데 이처녀는 다른 아무 생각없이 살고 있었다. 오직 나를 사랑하고 내게 사랑 받는다는 것을 알고는 이 바닷가 왕국에 살때 나는 어렸고 그녀도 어렸다. 그러나 나와 에너벨 리 와는 사랑 이상의 사랑으로 서로 사랑 했었다. 그사랑은 하늘에 날개 달린 천사도 부러워 할 정도 였었다. 정녕 이 때문에 오랜 옛날 바닷가 이 왕국에서 바람이 구름을 뚫고 불어와 아름다운 에너벨 리를 으실으실 춥게하고 그의 하늘의 친척들이 몰려 와서 나로 부터 그녀를 빼앗아가 바닷가에 이 왕국 무덤 속에 가두어 버렸다. 천사들은 천국에서 우리 절반만큼도 행복 하지를 않아 우리를 질투한 것이였다. 그렇다 그것이 바로 그이유 였었다. 바닷가 왕국, 사람들이 누구나 아다시피 밤중에 구름으로 부터 바람이 불어와 내 에너벨 리를 얼려 죽인 것은 ... 그러나 우리의 사랑은 나이 많은 사람 들과 우리보다 훨씬 더 현명한 사람들의 사랑보다도 우리 사랑은 훨씬 더 강한 것이였다 그리고 위로는 하늘의 천사들 아래론 바다밑 악마들까지도 결코 어여쁜 에너벨 리의 영혼으로부터 나의 영혼을 갈라 놓진 못했다. 달빛이 비칠 때면 아름다운 에너벨 리의 생각 별들이 비치면 에너벨 리의 빛나는 눈동자 그리하여 나는 밤새도록 누워 본다. 바닷가 그녀의 무덤 가에 ... 내 사랑, 내 생명, 내 신부 곁에 에드거 앨런 포 [ Edgar Allan Poe 1809 ~ 1849 ] -> 블티모어 [Baltimore ] 웨스트민스터 장로교회 묘지 [ Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery ] 묻힘

It was many and many a year ago,
